Apparently Scotland made a play at being a colonial player at the end of the 17th century. They tried to set up a Scottish colony on the coast of Panama, and it was a catastrophic failure and almost bankrupted the country and it was called the Darien Scheme. This is the building which served as the HQ for the company and which has sadly been torn down. I’d have liked to have visited. The colony and the building.
